I already have a domain registered and have database associated with it. I want to have a new domain but don't want to pay for database hosting in it. I'd like to use the database hosted in another domain. Is it possible to do this? |

I guess the OP wants to create an additional database on domain A, and be able to access it on domain B. (Or maybe the same data, but then runs in the risk you mentioned). This might be possible in several ways, the one most likely to work is to create a program running on domain A (as a CGI script or PHP) which provides an interface tot the database. A program (PHP[1], Perl, etc.) running on B can access the database on A, and present the results. Main disadvantage is that this is slow, and takes quite some programming skills. If you're lucky, you might be able to remotely connect to your database. If you can create additional users, and can create one with severe restrictions, that might be a much better option (but requires more skills IMO, at least understanding what you're doing) > You might find it better to get a host who doesn't charge silly fees, > and develop the sites independently. Yup, unless you really need (partial) data from A. For a buck a month you should be able to get hosting that *includes* a database (or more even). [1] AFAIK one can disable the fetching of remote pages with PHP, no idea if this is the case on domain B. -- John Bokma http://johnbokma.com/ AISE/AWW/SEO/web development forum: http://seo-expert-wiki.com/ |

Whether it's likely with your hosting is very questionable since you seem to be running at the bottom end. Why don't you ask your web host? Jeff > |

Domains can be hosted on the same account or server. The only time this is an issue, is if you have the other domain on another server or network, and even then, it should only be about granting access from the other server with the proper login credentials. You should absolutely not have to pay anyone for another database and should be able to use the same one. In fact, it would be odd, in this day and age, if you had to pay per database with your hosting. Most hosts allow you to use multiple databases and park or add domains. You should be able to do what you need to without an issue, unless your host is an oddball host. -- Tim Greer, CEO/Founder/CTO, BurlyHost.com, Inc. (You first point your additional domains to the same name server, then set up the addon domain.) Best wishes, Jan -- http://www.vic-fontaine.com/ |
